Nothing is better then a fine coffee

Antioxidants and Cancer-Fighting Properties

Coffee is a powerful source of antioxidants – agents that combat cancer-causing free radicals. Coffee is chock full of the compound methylpyridinium, which can’t be found in many other food items and not at the level available in coffee. You can get antioxidants from both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee as long as the beans are sufficiently roasted.

Increased Cognitive Ability

Studies have shown that regular coffee drinkers frequently score significantly higher on cognitive ability tests, spatial awareness exams, IQ tests, and short term memory studies.

The effects of coffee on an individual’s cognitive ability appeared to be more pronounced in elderly study participants and women.

Bowel Stimulation

Coffee is a stimulant and also a laxative. Some alternative practitioners even prescribe coffee enemas to stimulate the lower colon.

However, because coffee is also a diuretic, it can cause constipation in some individuals.

Reduced Risk for Gout

A large study of over 45,000 men that was conducted over a 12-year period showed the amount of coffee consumed was inversely related to their risk or likelihood of developing gout.

Weight Loss and Metabolism

Because coffee is a stimulant, the caffeine inside can give a boost to your metabolism, helping with weight loss and energy levels. If you look at the ingredients listed for most over-the-counter weight loss aids, you’ll find caffeine is often a primary ingredient.

Be careful though, as too much coffee or caffeine can also cause jitters, anxiety and wreak havoc on your sleeping patterns.

Better Brain Function

A recent study found that individuals who drank at least one to two cups of coffee per day scored significantly higher on memory recall, cognitive ability, logic comprehension and basic IQ tests.

So, the next time you’re guzzling coffee to get you through that late-night cram session, remember that it is doing a lot more than just keeping you awake.

Reduced Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

A study done by the Harvard School of Health found that men who drank approximately 6 8-oz cups of coffee, or 3-4 standard mugs could lower their risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes by as much as 50 percent. Meanwhile, women could reduce their risk by almost 30 percent.

Remember, everything should be practiced in moderation, and health concerns should always be discussed with a medical professional. So, while a moderate amount of coffee has its benefit, an excessive amount can also cause problems. Heavy coffee drinking can lead to irritability, anxiety, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular problems and higher cholesterol levels.

Scientists in Brazil are finding that un-roasted coffee beans, which contain large amounts of globulins proteins, work well to naturally ward off insects.

Paulo Mazzafera and his colleagues are working to develop the globulins to protect food crops. Their study appears in the February 2010 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The insecticidal properties of the purified proteins were tested against the cowpea weevil using artificial diets; and the results showed that small amounts of coffee proteins killed up to half of the insects.

In the future, scientists could potentially breed these globulin proteins into crops so plants would theoretically produce their own defenses against insects.

And no need to worry, globulins proteins are destroyed when the beans are roasted, so you won’t be sipping on insecticide in your next cup of coffee.

As a beverage, qishr (or kishr) and its variations are prepared from the husks of coffee. Qishr is the Arabic word for skin. On Ethopia’s Omo River, the beverage was called buno, presumably derived from bunna, the Amharic word for coffee. (None of these languages use the Roman alphabet, and phonetic transliterations always vary in spelling.) Though I’ve learned about the beverage during several trips to Ethiopia, because of my friend, Abdullah, I’ve saved this piece for Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, which began the weekend of August 22nd.

When I mentioned this drink to Abdullah, a Yemeni who grew up in Addis Ababa, he recalled it fondly. His mother served dates and qishr each evening during Ramadan to break the day’s fast. There is nothing religious about qishr, sometimes called qishr buna; it’s one family’s way to break the fast. His mother’s qishr was flavored with ginger and cardamom.

A brief review: coffee cherries contain seeds wrapped in “parchment.” First, the flesh of the fruit is separated, leaving the seeds, later to become coffee beans, in parchment. The seeds are dried and remain in parchment until they’re prepared for shipping. At this point, the beans are milled, separating the husks from the beans, which are then sorted and bagged for shipping.

When neighbors gather for buno, news of the tribe from this village and others is shared. Government visits, conflicts with other tribes, and harvest or planting news are all reported.

In most places, the husks are used for compost or burned as fuel to power the coffee processing operation. In Yemen and Ethiopia, parchment is sold to make qishr. In Ethiopia, the equivalent of 12 cents would buy about a quart volume of husks. This beverage may be available in other coffee-growing areas, but I’ve only encountered it in these countries.

Like coffee itself, various levels of care and consumer preference produce different taste experiences. When fermented fruit from the coffee cherries is left mixed into the husks, the taste changes considerably. In my cups, the fruit seemed to have been culled before brewing.

Although I’d heard of this beverage, I didn’t actually get a cup until I visited the lower Omo River. I accompanied my photographer wife, Jane, on one of her many visits among the tribes who still live traditionally along the river. On a few occasions we were invited to someone’s ono (the Kara house made of sticks, roofed with long grasses) for buno. As is often the case with coffee (e.g. the Ethiopian coffee ceremony in the Highlands has its own elaborate protocols), the Kara rituals surrounding this simple beverage greatly enrich the experience.

Our camp was adjacent to the Kara village of Duss, and we were privileged to be invited to morning “coffee” with Ari and Karsche. The structure of this pre-dawn occasion was remarkable. The embers of the evening’s fire are kept burning through the night. When Karsche arises, she revives the fire. The pot of water is put on the fire, and the husks are added to the boiling water.

Morning coffee occurs before dawn. No food is taken in the morning; this is breakfast. As invited guests arrive, they are seated according to gender and position or age. The man of the house always sits by the door, with a respected elder across from him. The other men sit to his left arranged by seniority, and the women sit on the opposite side, with the woman of the house by the fire.

The man of the house is served first, followed by important guests, the other men according to their seniority, and then the women. The buno is ladled from the pot into individual half-calabash gourds. Members of the household have specific ones reserved, just as we have our special mugs.

When all have been served, everyone waits for the host to begin. He blows across the surface, and he calls barjo (pronounced bario), the Kara (and Hamar) life force, as best I understand it. Barjo is everywhere. People have barjo, as do natural elements like clouds. Prospective bridegrooms are interviewed to evaluate their barjo. A person with the best barjo would be most harmoniously integrated into the society.

When there are no guests, the family still observes this ritual each morning.

When the man of the house is absent, as was the case on another occasion, his calabash is still served first. Later, after we had begun drinking, our hostess ladled from his calabash to hers, then added hot buno to each calabash. Serving the man’s buno in his absence is to acknowledge his spirit in the ono.

When neighbors gather for buno, news of the tribe from this village and others is shared. Government visits, conflicts with other tribes, harvest or planting news are all reported. When someone is speaking before he has brushed his teeth, he is thought to always tell the truth. Although government schools are now in most Ethiopian villages, the oral tradition is maintained at home. All Kara social gatherings at home start with buno. We observed a gathering of men discussing conflict with another tribe across the river. Buno came first. When Jane was invited to a female, mid-morning “coffee,” buno started the conversation.

Although the Kara drink also directly from the river, the water for buno is always clarified. After a very short time of stirring the water with a block of Kulup wood attached to a stick, the turbidity precipitates, and the water becomes clear.

I’m sure there are variations in strength, but each time I drank it, buno smelled and tasted like a very weak black tea, with a slight tang of tannin. There were no additives, and there wasn’t much flavor, certainly no coffee flavor, though the husks probably contain some caffeine. Other parts of the plant, including the leaves, have caffeine.

My buno (qishr) was really an innocuous drink, quite different from the sometimes sweetened and spiced version. While I can’t recommend it over a cup of roasted coffee, I strongly suggest you take any invitation to enjoy the social gathering surrounding a cup of buno. But you’ll probably need a cup of coffee soon after.

<a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

Oregon's unemployment rate has improved since the soldiers left for their final pre-deployment training, but it's still quite high. The rate was at 10.1 percent in February, according to the Oregon Employment Department.
“We're going to be pushing in every nook and cranny of our state to find employers who are willing to hire vets and I think we can do it,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon).
A new website, FortOregon.com, is being created to help soldiers find jobs and services.
Worksource Lane, the Lane County's employment office, already gets federal funding for three veteran's services officers who work to find returning and current vets find jobs.

The above is from Laura Rillos' “Home from Iraq — and looking for work” (KVAL — link has text and video) which is the latest attempt by the media to draw attention to the problems facing returning service members, especially those serving in the National Guard. The whole country is facing an unemployment crisis and a recession. For members of the Guard, returning home can be a lot like being laid off or fired in terms of money coming in. The Congress could address this and Wyden has proposed adding 90-days of pay for Guard members so they return with a cushion but whether or not the Congress will get behind such an idea remains to be seen — thus far, it appears no. Possibly most indicative via Rorye O'Connor's article for the Mt. Vernon Register-News on Senator Dick Durbin visiting an outpatient center in Mt. Vernon where he apparently made no mention of the economy or the way it weighs on those returning from deployments. Maybe the answer will be governors? Lance Renaud (KFJB via Radio Iowa) reports on two bills Iowa Governor Chet Culver has signed:

The first bill stipulates that veterans with service-connected injuries who qualify for unemployment or who receive benefits from the Veterans Trust Fund do not have to pay taxes on those benefits. The second bill directs the Iowa Department of Human Services to coordinate with the Mental Health Planning Advisory Council to ensure that a “knowledgeable” veteran serves on the council.

The Governor's Office issued the following press release on the bills Tuesday:

MARSHALLTOWN — Governor Chet Culver today signed two pieces of veterans’ legislation at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. House File 2532 allows benefits from the Veterans Trust Fund to be exempted from individual income tax, and Senate File 2175 provides for veteran representation on mental health policy bodies.

“As Commander-in-Chief of the Iowa National Guard, I am proud of the men and women who have served our nation in war and in peace, abroad and at home,” Governor Culver said. “Their commitment and courage is unrivaled and must always be honored. I am proud to work for those who have served, returned to their homes and families and, in some cases, need our support. My hope is that this legislation will provide the support and appreciation they all deserve.”

Below are summaries of the legislation the Governor signed:

House File 2532
Allows the two benefits of the Veterans Trust Fund – travel expenses related to follow-up medical care and unemployment assistance – that provide direct payments to the veteran to be exempted from individual income tax. The bill applies retroactively to January 1, 2010, for tax years beginning on or after that date.

Senate File 2175
Directs the Department of Human Services to coordinate with the Mental Health Planning Advisory Council so that a military veteran who is knowledgeable about behavioral and mental health issues of veterans is on the council. The council is required by federal law as a condition of receiving federal mental health funds. DHS does not make this appointment but can work with the council to identify and appoint a veteran. Also adds a member, appointed by the Governor, who is a military veteran knowledgeable about behavioral and mental health issues to the Mental Health, Mental Retardation, Developmental Disabilities, and Brain Injury Commission.

John Larson (Tacoma Weekly) notes the problems experienced by a Guard member returning from deployment and a service member leaving the military:

Chris MacDonald served in Kuwait for a year in the Army National Guard. When he returned to his home in Vancouver in 2008, the only work he could find was as a security guard. He quit and was on unemployment for a while. He has found the skills he learned in the military are hard to transfer into civilian work. MacDonald is pursuing work as a pipe fitter now.
Deidre Connor of Bonney Lake left the Army after nine years in 2005. She got an offer to clean kennels for minimum wage. “That is not what I want to do,” Connor said. “It is not putting my skills to use.”

Peter Hirschfeld (Vermont Press Bureau via Rutland Herald) reports on the “66 members of Vermont's Air Ambulance Unit” who will deploy to Iraq in September and are scheduled to serve there until September 2011 and notes that this will be the unit's second deployment to Iraq. Meanwhile Dusty King is serving in Iraq and, Kris Betts (KTEN News, link has text and video)reports, fourth graders in Sherman, Texas are sending his platoon coffee which they would not otherwise have. The teacher of the fourth graders is Gerri King, Dusty's mother, who says, “They feel forgotten over there. He said tell them thank you. It's such a wonderful thing to have someone remember us and send us coffee.”

The following community sites updated last night (and we'll include in On The Wilder Side to give them a link):

Many people like to hug their coffee cup for its warmth.
Alfredo is a coffee cup with no handle that creates a situation in which the only way to hold the cup is by hugging it. The wooden shell wraps the cup and gives it a welcoming look. The cups floats in the plate so that tension is created between them

@mogren  and all.

I don't think it's that unreasonable.
1. YOU DO NOT LOSE YOUR DATA. iTUNES HAS HAD BACKUP FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS NOW! Dudes, the same thing applies to any device with data on it!! RYDC! Any warranty terms or data aren't protected in repairs by 99% of companies. Your HD crashes in your DVR and you don't get your shows back. (Heck you swap boxes, you don't get your shows back-and there's no backup for most of those, none at all for free.)
This policy is only bad if you don't have a computer. How many people buying the iPad won't have computers? Really, not very many at all.
2. It sucks compared to a completely removable battery, which would probably run in the same price range, maybe $20 less, but you do get a new device.
3. It's only $100 and not $800 because if the rest of the iPad is good, then Apple can ship it back to the factory to replace the battery. The battery is soldered in, and you'd have to dismantle at least part of the unit to get at it. This is the same thing Apple does for iPods and iPhones (except the iPhone screen). It's not efficient for a regular repair process to fix them.
4. Refurbs: That's each person's take. I've personally had a great experience with Apple refurbs. You device should be in a good condition when you get a new one, or that's Apple's stated policy in other places.
5. Modifications and device problems: Think about it. It's the standard warranty stuff. Apple doesn't void your warranty for putting a sticker on an iPod. And they won't replace the device if other parts are broken because these terms extend beyond the normal warranty. Of course apple isn't going to charge you $100 to replace that screen if you drop it.

So yes, a removable battery is easier, but this is an Apple thing. It's nothing new and no different than any other policy they've had except for laptops which a tech can replace the battery easily.

So, yes, I guess you already know that starting today you’ll be able to pre-order Apple’s iPad. But in case you have something else in mind then you might be interested to check out the Doritos Tablet (video below the brake).

As you can see from the video embedded below, the original Doritos chip revolutionized everything: “it’s triangular, it’s mobile, it’s sexy.” And that’s how the Doritos Tablet was conceived. One of the most important features is the multitaste interface which I’m sure that no other tablet can offer. So if you’re ready to experience the Doritos spice 2.0 then you can go ahead and forget everything you knew about the iPad or any of its other competitors.

Now wasn’t that fun? It sure beats the Hitler-vs-iPad video in my book and it definitely goes to show that the iPad has made a big impression even before actually being available in stores for people to “taste.”

And since I definitely want to keep this humorous tone since it’s basically morning in most parts of the world and we don’t want to stress you too much with tech facts over coffee, here’s what the “iPad Buyer’s Guide” in haiku format, which Gizmodo just happened to put out, says:

16GB iPad Wi-Fi: $499
Carry just enough
Online when you’re near Wi-Fi
Buy without a huff

32GB iPad Wi-Fi: $699
If you have six bills
And don’t think 3G is key,
You are taking pills.

64GB iPad Wi-Fi: $599
More space than you’ll use,
Without a constant net link
Save your cash for booze.

16GB iPad 3G: $629
Too high of a price,
Too little space to save things.
Sorry, Jobs. No dice.

32GB iPad 3G: $729
Just enough, no more;
GPS to find your way.
This One we adore.

64GB iPad 3G: $829
The highest price
point’s probably not a good start.
First gens disappoint.

Well you can always pre-order the Wi-Fi iPad today or you can wait a while longer for the 3G to hit. Whatever the case may be, make sure you choose wisely. And make sure you come back and tell us what tablet you bought and why!

Picture from Gizmodo

How well did the iPad do in its first week you might ask? It looks like Apple’s first tablet sold quite well. We talked about unofficial numbers already and it was pretty clear that the device will sell very well even if customers haven’t actually had the chance to experience it so far.

The Wall Street Journal had access to inside sources that apparently said Cupertino “sold hundreds of thousands of the device” already. That must mean that Apple has sold at least 200k iPads already if not more since it has been reported earlier that in the first day alone Apple moved more than 120,000 units. Not a bad first week for Cupertino which goes to show, again, that Apple is not only very good at conceiving new devices but it is also very talented when it comes to pitching them to consumers and convincing them they absolutely need them, when in fact they really don’t.

According to some sources the iPad sales are going to surpass the sales of the original iPhone although, at least to me, that comparison only reflects one thing: Apple is better as selling stuff than it was before, and that’s really not a surprise anymore.

Even if the iPad is basically an iPhone on steroids, one can’t compare the two devices like that. The iPhone was the first smartphone from Apple, a company that didn’t have any experience in the mobile business at that time. Being a brand new technology, the original iPhone was also more expensive at first than the iPad and, most importantly, was tied to a carrier, which convinced some consumers not to buy it immediatelly.

The iPad comes three years later, a time in which Apple proved that it can take the smartphone business by surprise and rule it in a very short time frame. Thus the company can afford to make the iPad and future iPhones more affordable and not require consumers to sign up new 2-year agreements with AT&T or any other carrier for that matter, at least when it comes to iPad purchases.

Therefore, again, we are not surprised that Apple is doing well at selling the device nor are we really interested in iPhone vs iPad sales comparisons. What we are interested is what Apple will do to convince iPad users that they absolutely need an iPad in their lives. That’s right, folks, the iPad is all nice and dandy, even with the obvious flaws that it has, but content will be key to keeping early adopters from reselling it and moving to the next hot thing!

One of the iPhone’s biggest drawback was that you can’t change its battery yourself. But people have learned to live with that. Well folks, now that the iPad will start shipping early April, you should know that the device is just as bad when it comes to battery replacement and a bit more. What’s that supposed to mean?

First of all, it’s obvious you can’t change it yourself. Second of all, the company’s terms (which I bet not many of you bothered reading) state very clear that the iPad battery replacement service is actually not a battery replacement service. How’s that you may ask? We quote: “If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.” See “will replace” in there?

Just how different is that from the iPhone terms? “If your iPhone requires service only because the battery’s ability to hold an electrical charge has diminished, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee.” – There’s the difference, they “will service”.

Long story short, if your battery is faulting and you want it changed, better be prepared to send them your iPad and expect to get a replacement iPad that may not be yours, or which may not be new (yes, refurbished).

Piece of advice … backup all your data before doing that.

“Will the data on my iPad be preserved?
No. You will receive a replacement iPad that will not contain any of your personal data. Before you submit your iPad for service, it is important to sync your iPad with iTunes to back up your contacts, calendars, email account settings, bookmarks, apps, etc. Apple is not responsible for the loss of information when servicing your iPad.”

You gotta love Apple, right?

We kept talking about the actual number of available iPad units at launch in the past weeks and we kept getting mixed news and reports regarding the number of units Apple will be able to ship in March and April. However we haven’t gotten any official news that would either confirm or dismiss the rumors. What came instead was the official pre-order dates and ship dates and everyone assumed that iPad production is on schedule.

Today we hear more unconfirmed news and this time we’re talking about the actual number of iPad pre-orders. Although limited to two iPad units per person, it looks like iPad pre-sales are already a success. According to various sources Apple managed to already sell lots of iPads.

It seems that customers that wanted to change their pre-order status from home delivery to in-store pickup were not given a positive solution. Those customers were told to cancel current pre-orders and to complete a new in-store pickup order. But that will not guarantee them that an iPad will be waiting neatly in an Apple store as the company has been “overwhelemed” with iPad orders so far.

Does that mean that we’re looking at production problems again? Should we understand that Apple will not have as many iPads at hand on April 3 as it would have wanted?

Why would one want to change the delivery order from home shipping to in-store pick up? Well in some areas the iPad customers won’t receive the Apple iPad on April 3 since it’s a Saturday and they will have to wait until Monday, April 5, to get it. I guess that some folks have decided to pick the iPad in the closest Apple store instead and that’s what caused the whole commotion. Or, you know, you could wait two more days for the iPad to arrive! After all you did wait a lot for it already!

Rumors say that Apple has sold 50,000 iPad units in the first two hours which, although not confirmed yet, sounds pretty plausible. And probably the company will sell even more devices by April 3 as the iPad will turn out to be one of the hottest, most buzzed about devices of 2010. Even if it still lacks lots of features that we would have wanted to have in the first place…

How To Not Get Screwed On eBay Motors, From The Horse's Mouth

(Ed Note: The auction wizards at eBay Motors have been following the saga of McFly, the Once and Future Hyundai Owner. Because neither eBay nor Jalopnik want you to get screwed, we asked the 'Bay for some buying tips.)

With more than three million vehicles sold on eBay Motors to date, and a car selling every minute, eBay is one of the world's largest automotive marketplaces. The site brings together a huge community of buyers and sellers every day. Where else would you go to find a Tesla Roadster, a Porschefied Subaru WRX STI, a 1952 Studebaker pickup, and a Back to the Future DeLorean, all on the same day and in the same place?

Think about that for a second: three million sales. With turnover like that, there are bound to be anomalies like the recent Hyundai case. Still, there are protections in place on the site that help foster trust between buyers and sellers. Some of these protections are common knowledge; some aren't. To that end, here are some tips for prospective buyers:

Do Your Homework

1. Know what you're purchasing. We recommend seeing the car in person, but even so, rolled odometers or past accidents often hide under a veneer of shiny paint. That's why eBay offers free vehicle history reports on every eligible car and truck listing. We also highly recommend having an unbiased professional check out the car. If necessary, the site can faciliate such a check-out.

2. Know who you're dealing with. One of the best tools for eBay users is the feedback reputation system. It's basically a seller's rap sheet, and it allows buyers to avoid a scene from The Goods by viewing ratings and comments on the history of a potential seller. (Tip: If the dude is wearing a plaid blazer and wants you to check out his excellent Thundercougarfalconbird, he probably shouldn't be trusted.)

3. Communicate with the seller. Contacting the seller through the eBay Motors platform before bidding is one of the best ways to avoid sticky situations. Sellers should be prepared to answer questions and be up front about the vehicle's cosmetic and mechanical condition. (If not, the vehicle history report will probably narc on them anyway.)

4. Grab the title. It's always a good idea to see a copy of the vehicle's title before committing to a purchase. If the title has Wite-Out on it, run screaming.

5. Use common sense. This is perhaps the most important tip. Don't get carried away by wishful thinking or passion — no matter what the car is, another example will eventually come along, and not buying something hurts a lot less than losing thousands of dollars. Basically, you just need to use common sense — if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. (That rocket-powered, $1500-Buy-It-Now Jaguar D-Type that Steve McQueen once owned and flew to the moon in? Probably not real.) Use good sense and patience to sniff out any potential problems.

Protect Yourself

1. Never use Western Union, MoneyGram, or any other instant cash-transfer method to pay for a vehicle. This sort of thing is cool if you're buying a SlapChop (or in for a Cash4Gold transaction), but not with a car. If you decide to pay in cash, do so in person, and be sure to get a written record of your transaction. (Also, bring a friend that works out. When it comes to transaction security, too much muscle is never enough.)

2. Check to see if the vehicle you want to buy is covered by the eBay Motors Vehicle Purchase Protection Plan. You can find out in the “Buy Safely” section of the listing. Most vehicles are covered, and those eligible are protected for up to $50,000. (In order to be covered by the plan, eligible transactions must be made on the eBay Motors platform. In other words, if you found a car on eBay and purchased it in some other manner — say, going to the seller's house and offering him a briefcase of unmarked bills before the auction end — it doesn't count.)

These tips aren't a guarantee, but keeping them in mind will go a long way toward assuring a trustworthy, legitimate transaction on eBay. Happy bidding!

If you’ve been using the Internet, and specifically email, for any length of time, then by now you’re most likely aware of most of the common email scams that exist online. Dean covered the five most common email scams, so if you aren’t familiar with them, then please take the time to read his thorough article.

Beyond just basic email scams, there are other methods that scammers use to defraud people of their money through the Internet. Today, I would like to examine five additional Internet scams that are very commonplace, but unfortunately not quite as many people are aware of them.

These are scams that trip up the most people every year and lead to a substantial financial loss. Take the time to read through and understand these scams so that you never find yourself a victim of them.

Nigerian Scams Revisited

I remember watching a documentary a few years ago that detailed how scammers, usually located in third world countries, set up computer clusters connected to the Internet and send out thousands of Nigerian scam emails every day.

The name of the scam comes from the original form of this scam, which consisted of emails outlining a situation in Nigeria that required a massive transfer of money from that country into the United States for safety. For assisting with the money transfer, the recipient of the email is promised a percentage of the transfer amount, usually totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars to a few million.

Once this came became widely known, it immediately evolved and continues to evolve even today. It now takes a very wide variety of forms including the elderly sick person looking to transfer their entire estate into your bank account.

Then there is one of my personal favorites, the young woman in danger who is seeking a savior to help her – and of course she has a very large sum of money to offer as a reward. Here is an email from “Miss Diana” of West Africa, who has a DC worth $5.9 million, and is seeking to escape her country and live in the United States.

The scammers put together storylines and plots that appeal to the basic human emotions of greed, goodwill and love. In some cases they almost always reference God in some way – in an effort to appeal to western Christian values. In the end, the many variations of the Nigerian scam end in only one place if you offer up any of your contact information or, even worse, your bank account information – an empty bank account.

Scammed By A Counterfeit Website

The second most common Internet scam is email phishing. Dean mentioned this in his article (fake links in emails to banks or Paypal), and MUO covered SonicWALL, which can detect phishing emails. However, did you know that even if you don’t click on a fake link and you follow the advice to type in your bank or Paypal’s URL directly into the browser, that the site could still be counterfeit?

It’s true. If you visit the wrong website or download the wrong file from an infected email attachment, you could end up with malware on your PC that specifically targets a browser security flaw. Internet Explorer seems to be the most vulnerable to these. The Malware basically re-routes your browser URL query to a different page than the domain that you typed in.

Because the scammer has altered the DNS settings for a specific website or hijacks your browser, it’s very hard to realize that you’re actually visiting a counterfeit version of the site you intended to visit. How do you prevent such a scenario from happening to you?

First, run MalwareBytes religiously. Second, keep your browser fully patched and updated. And finally, be vigilant about anything on the website that seems a bit odd. Thankfully, most major banks are catching on to this problem and are starting to incorporate a unique image of your choosing into the login process. Each time you log in, the website asks you to confirm the image. If the website doesn’t ask you to confirm, or it’s the wrong image, then you know you may be visiting a counterfeit site.

Three Major eBay Scams

While the Nigerian scams and phishing emails with fake links are the two most common Internet scams, the popularity of eBay over the past decade has led to another whole family of Internet scams. There are three significant scams that you should be aware of if you’re an eBay user. The first is a scam that targets eBay sellers, and it involves the scam artist obtaining a matching broken item that’s identical to the item that you’re selling. Often, such scam artists will actually purchase one right off eBay that’s in need of repairs or otherwise has some damage to it at a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Then they will purchase your identical item, which is in perfect condition. They’ll make payment to you, receive your item, and then email you to say that the item was damaged in shipment. Often, they’ll threaten to give you negative feedback (a hard thing to deal with as an eBay seller). Many sellers simply cave and send a full refund, and the scammer returns the damaged item, keeping the working item for themselves.

Protect yourself from this scam by either requiring your buyers to purchase shipping insurance, or doing what the seller in the above example did and put in writing that all sales are final, and no returns are accepted.

The insurance option is the best approach because it removes all liability from you as the seller. If the buyer claims that the device was damaged in shipment, it’s up to them to prove it to the postal service, and face fraud charges if they are found lying.

The second common eBay scam is the Auto Scam. The Motors section of eBay is a bustling auto marketplace where huge volumes of sales take place every day. Unfortunately, because these are big ticket items, and because the financial transactions on eBay are not very secure for buyers, the marketplace is very attractive to con artists.

The con is very simple. First, they list a very popular big-ticket auto that they actually don’t even have. Sometimes they’ll even just steal photos from other listings.

Now, I don’t know if the listing above is authentic or not, but I offer the listing as an example of how much money is at stake. If you really want this car and you don’t live near enough to inspect it, you might be willing to cough up payment, or even a partial payment, at the end of the sale. Don’t do it. There are far too many examples where people have sent in a significant chunk of change, and the seller simply disappeared without a trace. Never bid on an auto on eBay Motors unless an on-site inspection by you or a third party on your behalf is agreed upon.

The last eBay scam is shown above. As a seller, you’ll get used to notifications from eBay, and sometimes it’s easy to assume they’re all authentic. Scammers will scour completed eBay sales and then send these fraudulent emails to the seller, as though it’s from eBay’s automated system. The goal of the email is to get you to click on the link and log into your eBay account. The moment you do – your eBay account and all financial information contained therein, is compromised.

Have you ever been “taken in” by an Internet scam? Do you know of any other popular Internet fraud or scams that are floating around out there? Let readers know in the comments section below.

We think ebay tipps could help you!

Torrents on isoHunt are indexed and cached from hundreds of sites, and enhanced by aggregating identical torrents from multiple sites to give you torrents that are always updated with the latest active trackers, so your BitTorrent client can find the most peers to download with.

Tip: On dead torrents you find elsewhere, you can search for its info_hash here (40 characters string), which gives you the same torrent with oftentimes more trackers and peers to bring your torrent back to life.Hey guys,

Don't you hate it when you write a whole message here, then ebay has an error when you click 'Post Message', and you lose all that you have written? AHH. Always copy and paste your writing as a backup! Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. Not sure if I can write this again at 1am. Well, here's the short of it…

A couple months ago, I was welcomed by ebay as a Bronze Powerseller. On my last invoice, I received a 15% discount. This past month, my 3-month sales have briefly dipped to $2,600, but will soon go beyond the $3,000 mark again in the coming week. I am still a Bronze Powerseller, but on this month's invoice, I did not receive a discount. Shouldn't I still receive the discount if my Powerseller status has not been revoked during a short decline in sales?

Aufgeschoben ist nicht aufgehoben.

Besser spät als nie!

Der Apfel fällt nicht weit vom Stamm.

Ein gutes Gewissen ist ein sanftes Ruhekissen

Frisch gewagt, ist halb gewonnen.

Hochmut kommt vor dem Fall

Jedes Ding hat seine zwei Seiten.

Kleinvieh macht auch Mist

Lange Rede, kurzer Sinn.

Sage Dir hier ganz still gute Nacht!
